Burma Update: September 28, 2007

Dear Friends,

I write this short note to you with deep pain and distress. I know all of you are in the same state of mind with me.

I’m so sorry that I was unable to give you updates for the past 3 days. But I believe you all are following closely on the situation in Burma since the crisis in Burma really hits the international headlines especially since this ruthless regime starting killing monks and people.

As much as international media across the globe is covering all happening in the country around the clock, the people in Burma have been so courageously marching on the streets knowingly they would be shot and killed while many are making sure the information reach to outside world immediately as things happen.

With this note, I would like to inform you to watch and follow the situation on the following blogs and website as some blogs are directly posted from inside Burma. Log on to the following blogs and watch some footages of what's happened yesterday.

Even non-Burmese friends, you can still watch the visuals of the shooting, running and marching scenes. But APPPB will try to facilitate something soon for our APPPB network's non- Burmese friends to be able to get immediate update on situation in English. I will also establish a mechanism to give you regular update.

This is all for me now. In the afternoon, I will send you the formal update. I know all of you are already stepping up with your solidarity action plans. I have been receiving all information from you and thank you for all your support for the people inside.

Today, I don't know how they will and how much more violence the military thugs will do again, BUT the people will continue with their defiance and continue to proceed.

Yesterday was another massacre. Monasteries in Rangoon were violently raided and at least one thousands of monks have been arrested already while many beaten up brutally.

Protests took place not only in Sule, but in some other areas in Rangoon, as well as in Mandalay.

The SPDC media last night reported 9 deaths. But eyewitnesses on the ground reported about 200 were shot and killed. A few hundreds of protesters were arrested and many injured. One Japanese national was one among those shot and dead, already confirmed by the SPDC.

Well, this is all brief update for what happened inside. Will come back soon with comprehensive update in the afternoon.

In Solidarity,

Khin Ohmar
APPPB Coordinator

Dear Friends,

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said, “Fear is a Habit; I am not Afraid.” The people marching on the streets cry out: “WE CAN’T LOOSE AGAIN!!!!”

As of this posting (4:00 Burmese Std Time), people in Burma are continuing with their defiance and gathering on the streets again in downtown Rangoon despite of the extreme use of force and violence by the authorities that they have experienced and witnessed over the past two days – the beating, shooting and killing, and the continuing arrests. There have placed double barricades blocking that no one gets near to Sule Pagoda where shooting and killing took place yesterday.

At least 10,000 or so protesters are gathering around the Theinggyi market area in downtown Rangoon and trying to get into group. But soldiers (Battalion 66 as shown on the badges) are patrolling in the area and when they see people starting gathering they fire guns into the air, chase the people and beat and arrest those who could not run.

An hour ago, this is the update on people arrested: About 10 people, mostly young women, were arrested in front of Ministers Office (Wongyimyar Yone), Ahnawrata Road. About 50 have been arrested in Theingyi market area. There can be more that we don’t have information yet. In spite of the international outcry, the Burmese junta continues to prove who they are and challenge the world community as they continue to commit the violence against the people.

Now it’s reported that the UN Special Envoy, Mr. Gambari, got the visa to enter Burma, but we don’t know yet when he will move in.

There is an incredible increase of solidarity actions around the world from the leaders and the people of the world taking place in many countries. Some actions include statements, demonstrations, candle light vigils, online petitions, etc. For example, Burmese and friends of Burma have been holding series of demonstrations in many countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, Finland, USA, UK, etc. I'm sure there are more.

Please log on those web links and blog links I sent you in this morning update to continue to observe the situation. As said in the previous email, we are trying to set up a mechanism for all our solidarity friends to get updated continually as things proceed in Burma.

This is all for now.

In Solidarity,

Khin Ohmar, APPPB Coordinator
