Burma Partnership Weekly Briefer: Burma in 1st Week of Historical March

"...March is a historical and significant month for Burma, as 20 years ago in 1988 it was the month that saw first student protests, which finally led the nationwide people’s uprising for democracy and human rights on August 8, known as 8888.

It was on the night of March 13 in 1988 when the riot police forces raided Rangoon Institute of Technology compound and shot students, in which RIT student Phone Maw was killed, a few other students wounded and many arrested. This violent attack and information black-out on this incident by the government created outrage among students. In response students organized protests which finally led the entire nation's people to rise up against one party military rule on August 8. Now it’s more than a decade that March 13 has been commemorated as Burma’s Human Rights Day..."
