September 18: Global Day of Protests
Dear Friends,
Now we are only 4 days away from the Global Day of Protests for Burma – September 18. We are calling on your support to show your solidarity with the people of Burma by organizing and/or joining demonstrations at China's embassies and consulates on Tuesday, September 18th, 2007, the 19th anniversary of the take-over of Burma's military regime in 1988. In 5 major cities in the US and in a dozen other countries there will be protests in front of Chinese embassies and consulates, according to USCB.
We are hoping that the Burmese and solidarity friends of Burma in Asia Pacific region will also join this action for the people of Burma. We understand that organizing protests may not be the best option for some of you in your areas.
In this case, we would like to urge that you drop a message of protest by email to nearest embassies and consulates of China in your respective areas.
Please kindly let us know your plan of action. If APPPB and/or USCB can be of any assistance in your planning to join this Global Day of Protests, please feel free to let me know. You may also download a flyer prepared by US Campaign for Burma (USCB) at www.uscampaignforburma.org
At the moment, the SPDC is sending out special envoys to China, Russia, North Korea, and Cuba, and it is assumed that the regime is trying to reassure support from these countries at the UN Security Council. We hope that this time we raise our voice loud enough to China that it is time to support the struggle for democracy by the people – but not the “disciplined democracy” process by the military dictators. China must end its support to the SPDC that prolongs and intensifies the suffering of the Burmese.
Thank you. Below is the update for you today.
In solidarity,
Khin Ohmar
Coordinator, APPPB
